New National Code of Practice for education providers – 2018

A new National Code of Practice for Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students 2018, to be known as ‘National Code 2018’, will commence on 1 January 2018. Its a good step forward in ensuring students can compare education providers using genuinely standardized parameters.

National Code 2018 for education providers has been introduced to protect the reputation and quality of Australia’s courses and international education services, which underpin the long-term benefits for trade and foreign relations and are imperative to growth in the trade in education services.

Deloitte Access Economics reports international education and tourism are Australia’s top two services exports, with international education set to be one of five key super-growth sectors that will support Australia’s transitioning economy into the next decade. The ABS reported this sector generated $21 billion in revenue in Australia in 2015, with almost $300 million of this coming from students’ visiting family and friends.

The National Code 2018 contains eleven Standards relating to marketing and recruitment practices, education agents, visa requirements, complaints and appeals.
